Facebook suspends white nationalist accounts over protest threats

Facebook has suspended accounts linked to white nationalist groups amid raging protests against racism and police brutality.

Some of those accounts urged people to bring weapons to recent demonstrations following last week’s police killing of George Floyd, according to Facebook. The company also took down accounts that falsely claimed to be affiliated with the leftist Antifa movement.

Some affected accounts had ties to the Proud Boys, the right-wing group that was involved in an Upper East Side brawl in 2018. Others were linked to American Guard, a self-described constitutional nationalist group with “a background with connections to anti-immigrant extremism, hatred, and violence,” according to the Anti-Defamation League.

Facebook was planning to crack down on both groups but moved faster after discovering how they were talking about the protests, CNN reported.

Facebook’s move came after Twitter suspended a bogus Antifa account that was reportedly tied to the white nationalist group Identity Evropa. The post falsely claimed that members of the anti-fascist group — which President Trump has called a terrorist organization — were planning to “move into the residential areas” and “take what’s ours,” according to CNN.

It’s unclear whether Facebook has removed any genuine Antifa accounts for making similar threatening posts.

At least one Facebook staffer has resigned over CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to leave up Trump’s post suggesting looters should be shot. Twitter flagged the message last week, saying it violated rules against glorifying violence.
